safety guidelines

Using your Vuuris responsibly ensures safe, enjoyable experiences. Always prioritize safety. Fire can be dangerous if mishandled. Follow these guidelines, local laws, and any burn bans. In the US, check with local fire departments for restrictions, especially in wildfire-prone areas; adhere to NFPA standards for outdoor fires.

We are not liable for any injuries or damages as a consequence of not following our safety and any other guidelines.

Important Warnings:

  • Vuuris products are for outdoor use only. Never use indoors or in enclosed spaces.
  • Keep children and pets at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from the Vuuris. Leash pets if necessary, and ensure children do not play with fire tools or add fuel.
  • Never leave a burning fire unattended.
  • Do not use flammable liquids (e.g., gasoline, lighter fluid) to start or accelerate the fire.
  • Adult supervision is required at all times; do not operate the Vuuris while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Inspect the Vuuris for damage before each use; do not use if any parts are compromised.

Unpacking and Assembly:

  • Unpacking, setup, and movement should be done by a minimum of two people, as the parts are heavy.
  • Do not roll the cooking plate during transport, as it can create scratches and damage.
  • Always wear gloves when placing the cooking plate or assembling the Vuuris

Placement and Setup:

  • Place on a stable, level, non-flammable surface (e.g., stone, concrete, or gravel). Never place directly on combustible surfaces.
  • Place the Vuuris minimum 10 feet (3 meters) from buildings, overhangs, trees, fences, or flammable materials; 25 feet (8 meters) recommended in wildfire-prone areas per NFPA guidelines.
  • Next to placing the Vuuris on a hard surface, always make sure to level the unit using the adjustable feet; but don't extend the feet by more than 1/3 inch (8 millimeters) to avoid an unstable Vuuris.
  • Avoid usage when there are windy conditions; wind can spread embers and create fire danger (avoid use if winds exceed 15 mph or 24 km/h).
  • Ensure overhead clearance (no low branches or structures).
  • Do not move the Vuuris or change setup when the unit is hot or has a fire inside.

During Use:

  • Supervise at all times. Have a hose, bucket of water, sand, or fire extinguisher (Class A or multi-purpose) nearby.
  • Wear non-flammable clothing; avoid loose fabrics.
  • Do not overload with fuel; keep fire manageable.

Fuel and Lighting:

  • Use only dry, seasoned hardwood or approved commercial logs. Avoid softwoods (e.g., pine) that spark excessively, treated wood, trash, or plastics (toxic fumes). Using wood pellets or lump charcoal is possible when stuck to dry, untreated options, but not recommended as logs will provide quicker warmth and a better experience.
  • Build small fires initially. Use kindling and natural fire starters. Build the fire in a log cabin or tepee shape for even burning and less smoke.
  • Don't overfill the Vuuris or use large amounts of tropical hardwood that can get very hot; it is dangerous and can also cause too high temperatures resulting in the warping of the cooking plate or damaging of the enamel coating.

Extinguishing:

  • Allow to cool completely before covering or storing.
  • Douse with water, stir ashes, and douse again until cold. Never bury hot ashes.
  • Before disposing of ashes, make sure they are completely cold and out; extinguishing with water before throwing in a regular bin is highly recommended to ensure the fire is fully dead.
  • Never extinguish a fire in the Vuuris with water or put water on an operating Vuuris; it can create a thermal shock which can cause damage to the metals and enamel coating.

Maintenance:

  • The Vuuris pit, small base, and large base are made of stainless steel, but the cooking plate is made of carbon steel and can rust when not properly maintained and oiled; be aware of orange rust stains that can occur on clothes or surfaces that the cooking plate is in contact with.
  • Be aware that after use, the Vuuris may be dirty with oil from cooking and cause stains on clothes. Clean the Vuuris after each use to remove grease and residue; this prevents fire hazards and will ensure your Vuuris keeps looking great and is clean to use.
  • Oil the carbon steel cooking plate regularly to prevent rust (every 2-4 weeks); store covered when not in use for long periods of time, especially in humid or rainy conditions.
  • A natural patina (discoloration) on stainless steel parts is normal and does not affect safety.

Emergency:

  • If fire spreads, evacuate and call emergency services immediately (dial 911 in the US).
  • For burns or injuries, seek medical attention promptly; keep a first aid kit nearby.

By following these guidelines, you'll enjoy safe gatherings. Check local regulations; some areas restrict open fires.
